The restored arches are more clearly presented here than in the previous aerial view; the present view is from the south. Beyond the two arches associated with the Imperial Cult Building lies another arch that springs from the rebuilt northwestern corner of the Macellum and joins the large arch at the northeast corner of the forum. This sequence of three arches establishes a long visual corridor that unites several spaces along the east side of the forum. Moreover, the sequence of arches in this stretch of the forum is a citation of a larger urban phenomenon, namely the placing of arches at critical junctures in an urban armature. A local example of the phenomenon occurs just beyond this zone in the alignment of two arches at opposite ends of via del Foro. The Imperial Cult Building thus clearly asserts its role in Pompeii’s urban armature.
