This is the first of four studies that present the Imperial Cult Building without a roof. The air view from the southwest establishes the context for the Imperial Cult Building. It is situated between the Macellum to the north and the Sanctuary of Augustus to the south. The building does not have a façade like those of other buildings on the forum which were set back from the colonnade. Here the building co-opts the forum colonnade and incorporates it into its own design employing the modifications in columnar scale and projection described above. The person walking along the forum colonnade perforce entered the building and may have been drawn deeper into its interior. Based on archaeological and design evidence not presented here, we have restored arches at the entrances to the building. See next image.
